A Salute to Perth’s Radio Sweetheart: Kate Mac
It’s a typical Perth winter day, the sun is shining, birds are singing and I’ve wrangled a sickie from work (unfortunately legitimate due to a wrist op… or so I’m saying haha!). What else is a girl to do but go out for coffee in Claremont and maybe do a little window shopping! Window shopping turns into “Sorry can you just reach into my purse and grab my credit card as I don’t have the use of my right hand and I need that neon sweater you have hanging in the window” (all in one breath) and before I know it I’m late for my coffee date!
I’m finally settled into the comfy alfresco at Madrid when from behind the pillar pops Perth’s favourite NOVA sweetheart Kate Mac! All glowy (yes this is a word Mr Spellcheck), bubbly and full of hugs Kate has to be the epitome of what I love about Perth women – gorgeous, stylish, easy going and fun loving.
As we get stuck into our coffee and lively chit chat it is obvious why she has cemented such a distinctive Perth following as NOVA’s afternoon personality. Having interviewed countless international and national music icons such as 30 Seconds to Mars, Angus and Julia Stone, Sneaky Sound System and Cobra Starship, she is also actively involved in NOVA’s many promotional activities including last year’s The End of Polio Concert where she hosted and interviewed John Legend and Bliss n’ Eso.
For the past two years Kate has also been involved with Perth Fashion Festival on behalf of NOVA and was given the opportunity to interview some of our cities biggest names in fashion – photographer Russel James, Alvin Fernandez (Ae’lkemi), Aurelio Costarella, Shane Newton (Zsadar), Ange Lange and Tony Sage. Her favourite part (very jealously writing this right now) was being dressed by both Poppy Lissiman and Aurelio Costarella.
The list doesn’t stop there either! Kate has had last year’s face of PFF, Nicole Trunfio, help host her show and assisted PFF festival director Mariella Harvey-Hanrahan judge the APEX awards (Australian Teenage Fashion awards). Jealous anyone?
With all this under her belt, the next exciting chapter of Kate Mac beckons and what does this entail you might ask? Just moving to the Cayman Islands (umm does life get any better?!?) that’s what! As sad as we are to loose our favourite radio sweetheart we are excited to hear we will be able to stream her via X107.1 Cayman Radio station!
Kate’s final days with NOVA were last week, but before she jet sets off half way around the world we thought we’d get a few questions in about fashion, style and Perth!
How would you describe your fashion style?
I think relaxed and beachy would be me. I do most of my shopping at surf stores and try to keep things a little quirky where I can. I’m not big girly girl although I’d like to be!
Your “must have” fashion or beauty item for winter?
A good, trusty pair of Jeans and Boots!
Favourite Perth fashion designer?
I would have to say Poppy Lissiman – she is incredibly talented and I love the way she uses colour. I also love Zara Bryson.
Favourite place to shop?
I don’t really like the busyness of the city (I like to shop in peace), Leederville is my favourite.
Favourite retail store?
Best runway show you’ve seen at PFF?
What you are going to miss the most about Perth?
The obvious ones are my family and friends, I’m pretty lucky to have a really tight network of people around me so the move is going to be tough. Luckily the Cayman Islands has similar beaches and weather to Perth so I won’t have to miss that as much! I will miss work a lot, I spent 6 years of my life at Nova, which will certainly be tough to walk away from.
A big thank you to Kate for taking the time to chat to us and we wish her all the very best! Looking forward to hearing her adventures from the Caymans!
